It is known that the geology of our region makes our dwellings at risk of elevated radon levels. The article below provides a detailed first-person account from a property owner in Ottawa who successfully mitigated radon levels in their house. We are sharing it because it will answer many of your questions about this known health risk, and it provides links to many helpful resources.
At least one property owner around our lakes has recently had a similar experience. Before professional mitigation, measured levels in their house were approximately 200 Bq/m3, which is at the upper limit of acceptable risk. The levels fell to less than 10 Bq/m3 after mitigation.
You can find a list of certified professionals in our area who perform radon mitigation at: https://c-nrpp.ca/find-a-professional/. There are several in Ottawa and Kingston, and one in Almonte. FYI, electronic radon detectors cost around $200 (see the article for more information) and a standard mitigation procedure is generally in the range of $3000 but will vary due to specific circumstances.
