The following information was provided by our Lake Steward in a 2009 News Sheet and has been reproduced here for your convenience.

I would like to remind everyone of a boater’s checklist to follow before launching any and all watercraft. We are fortunate to not have any zebra mussels in our two lakes and we can all do a few things to ensure that we remain mussel-free.

If your watercraft has been stored over the winter at a marina or other facility, there is a good chance it has been tested by launching it in the waters closest to that marina. Those waters may contain zebra mussels or other invasive species. So it is imperative that you pressure-wash your boat or vessel or thoroughly dry it in the sun for 4 or 5 days prior to launching it in Little Silver or Rainbow Lakes. If you have stored your watercraft on your own property and it has not been to any other lakes or rivers, then this is not necessary.

If you have friends or visitors who wish to bring their watercraft to our lake please also ensure that they follow this procedure. The best way to stop invasive species is through education, and we need to get the word out to everyone.

Thanks for your support.

Inspiration

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”
